Faces Federal Charges
Special Agent in
Charge of the FBI Phoenix Division, John E. Lewis, announced today, November
10, 2006, that Dennis Timothy Williams Jr., age 31, was taken into federal
custody and charged with Interference with Commerce by Threats, Violence
and Robbery, and Discharging a Firearm During a Crime of Violence.
On November 9, 2006,
at approximately 12:40pm, an armored truck guard for AT Systems West,
Inc. was robbed as he exited the Fry's grocery store located at 4315 West
Bell Road, Phoenix, Arizona with money he received from Chase Bank located
inside the grocery store. The guard was threatened at gunpoint as his
assailant, later identified as Williams, advised the guard to give him
the money or be killed.
The guard relinquished
the money, however a gun battle ensued as the guard and Williams exchanged
gun fire. As a result, the guard was shot during the incident sustaining
a gun shot wound to the foot. The guard was treated and released from
an area hospital.
Williams fled the scene with the money in a black, Chevy pickup. Phoenix
Police located Williams and his gun-shot damaged vehicle in a near by
apartment complex. Phoenix Police took Williams into custody and recovered
the stolen funds and weapon used by Williams, a loaded .45 caliber Glock
handgun.
The FBI is now assisting
the Phoenix Police Department in this matter. Due to the violent nature
of the crime committed, federal charges against Williams are being pursued.
Federal charges include one count of Interference with Commerce by Threats,
Violence and Robbery, Title 18 USC, Section 1951, which carries a maximum
penalty of 20 years in prison and Discharging a Firearm During a Crime
of Violence, Title 18 USC, Section 924(c), which carries a minimum penalty
of 10 years imprisonment to life.
